As a child, our family would watch the original Star Trek show. I was only a little kid, but science was already a favorite show. We would catch the Mutual of Omaha series; any Jacques Cousteau specials; National Geographic specials... and the Star Trek show. And there was good old Leonard Nimoy playing Spock (left in picture). Analytic, scientific, smart, and of invaluable assistance in getting the Enterprise and its crew out of whatever dilemma it had gotten itself into (I think that was Captain Kirk's job description). Thank you Spock for making science cool. You will be missed. Leonard Nimoy passed away today at the age of 83. As robotics continues to develop and impact our lives more and more, DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) has put out the challenge for high school students to submit 2-3 minute videos of what they would like to see our future with robotics look like. The contest is called Robots4Us and teams can be 1-3 students. Five teams from the country will be selected to attend the DARPA Robotics Challenge finals in June. Deadline for submission is April 1st, so start thinking now!
Thanks to Bill Lovell from c-Link Systems for letting us know about this great opportunity.
Did you know that you can apply for a Young Mind Award? These awards include levels for middle school and high school students and can be as high as $5,000! Do you have an idea? You'll have to make a 3 minute video and write up a project report, but I know there are a lot of youth in Maine who would love to take this on.
Check out their website for more information and start planning your next success! Note: Maine Robotics is not affiliated in any way with the Young Mind Awards, so check out their website. |
